This last weekend was a long weekend here in Canada and we spent it in Alaska (where it wasn't a long weekend but my, they had good weather). The White Pass railway runs from Skagway, Alaska to Carcross, Yukon and follows the route that gold seeker's once hiked and then trained as they traveled to their fortunes in the Klondike. Now it's merely a tourist trip from coastal Alaska to the Yukon. This weekend in May they offer a "Yukoner's Special." We get 75% off the fare and it worked into a wonderful weekend in Alaska.

Shea and I traveled to Skagway with a group of mates and we camped a couple of nights there in beautiful weather. Though only a couple of hours and 150 km away from Whitehorse, Skagway is a full month ahead of us in the seasons. The leaves are out in full force there and it was warm enough for me to brave shorts. The train trip took us from the lush coast to above-the-tree-line mountains.

The carriages are old rattlers named after rivers in the Yukon.

Shea was super excited by it all. I think he barely sat down for the entire trip!!
